The History of Oxford United FC
Oxford United FC was founded in 1893 (as Headington United) and is a club with a strong local identity in the university city of Oxford. The team adopted its current name in 1960 and has since become an important part of the city’s sporting life, where academic tradition meets passionate football culture.
Since 2001, the club has played its home matches at Kassam Stadium, a modern venue with a capacity of just over 12,000 spectators. Located just outside the city centre, the stadium offers a lively matchday experience where fans are close to the action and the atmosphere quickly builds around the pitch.
The club’s greatest success came in 1986 when Oxford United won the League Cup after defeating Queens Park Rangers at Wembley. During the same period, the team also competed in the English top division under manager Maurice Evans, with players such as Ray Houghton and John Aldridge in the squad.
