AS Roma history
Over the years, Roma have become known for developing homegrown talent. Club legends such as Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi are prime examples – both came through the club’s own academy and have made the most appearances in Roma’s history. Francesco Totti is also the club’s all-time top scorer, with 250 goals to his name. Founded in 1927, the club is affectionately known as Giallorossi (the yellow and reds) or I Lupi (the wolves) and has won three league titles, the most recent in 2001. Roma have also lifted the Coppa Italia on nine occasions.
AS Roma share their stadium with their rivals and city neighbours, SS Lazio. Both clubs play at the iconic Stadio Olimpico, the Olympic Stadium, which holds over 70,000 spectators. The matches against Lazio – known as the Derby della Capitale – are among the most intense and emotional derbies in European football, and an experience every fan should witness at least once in their lifetime.

Where is AS Roma’s stadium, Stadio Olimpico, located?
The stadium is located north of Rome and can easily be reached on foot from Vatican City, offering a pleasant 4 km walk along the river. Alternatively, if you’re staying closer to the main train station (the Termini area in Rome), the best option is to take the metro, Italy’s version of the London Underground. Here are some directions that might be useful:
From Termini, take Metro Line A (the orange line) towards Ottaviano and get off at Flaminio. Then take tram number 2 from Piazzale Flaminio to Piazza Mancini (the final stop on the line). From Piazza Mancini, walk towards the river and cross the bridge at Ponte Duca d’Aosta to reach the stadium.
Alternatively, from Termini, take Metro Line A (the orange line) towards Battistini and get off at Ottaviano. Then take bus number 32 to Piazzale della Farnesina, from where you can walk to the stadium.
You can also take buses such as route 910, which runs from the Termini area to near Stadio Olimpico – we recommend asking your hotel reception for advice on the best line to take and for updated timetables, as they change regularly.
What are AS Roma’s fans called?
“Romanisti” is the most common nickname for AS Roma supporters. It originates from the Italian word romano, meaning “Roman,” and is used to describe the loyal fans who support the club.
The supporters are also often called “Giallorossi”, which means “the yellow and reds.” This nickname is based on the club’s traditional colours – giallo (yellow) and rosso (red).
Fans are sometimes also referred to as “Lupi”, which means “wolves” in Italian. The name references the legendary Roman she-wolf said to have nursed Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. AS Roma has adopted this wolf as its emblem and mascot.
Who are the greatest Roma players of all time?
Some of the AS Roma players who appear on every all-time ranking list include:
Daniele De Rossi
Bruno Conti
Francesco Totti
Giuseppe Giannini
Roberto Pruzzo
Paolo Roberto Falcao
We haven’t listed the players in any particular order. We’d never dare to.
Who are AS Roma’s rivals?
The rivalry between AS Roma and Lazio is one of the most intense and passionate in Italian football. Their encounters are known as the Derby della Capitale and are considered among the fiercest derby matches in the world.
AS Roma and Lazio fans live for this match, and the entire city practically comes to a standstill when it takes place. There’s a well-known saying about the Derby della Capitale: “In Milan, they talk about the derby for a week; in Rome, for a year.”
The rivalry has deep historical, political, and social roots, reflecting the divide between the working-class neighbourhoods traditionally associated with Roma’s supporters and the wealthier districts linked to Lazio fans.
The Derby del Sole, played between S.S.C. Napoli and A.S. Roma, is also one of the major rivalries in Italian football. For a long time, this derby symbolised the strong bond between Roma and Napoli, thanks to their gemellaggio — a type of friendship or alliance between clubs and their supporters, usually based on shared values or a common cause. In the case of Roma and Napoli, it stemmed from their mutual opposition to the dominant northern clubs, particularly Juventus and the two Milan sides, Inter and AC Milan.
