The history of Genoa CFC

Founded in 1893, Genoa CFC is Italy’s oldest football club and one of the country’s most historic. The club enjoyed great success in its early years, winning nine league titles between 1898 and 1924. During the 20th century, however, Genoa often competed in Serie B, although they also had spells in Serie A.

Home matches are played at Stadio Luigi Ferraris in front of around 36,000 spectators, and Genoa are renowned for their passionate supporters. The fierce rivalry between Genoa CFC and the city’s other club, Sampdoria, reaches its peak during the Derby della Lanterna. Swedish legend Gunnar Gren played for Genoa in the 1950s, and the club holds an important place in the history of Italian football.
