West Ham’s History
West Ham United, known as The Hammers, was founded in 1895 and, since the London 2012 Olympics, has played at London’s Olympic Stadium, which has a capacity of 57,000 spectators. The club gained significant popularity among the younger generation after the film Green Street Hooligans in the mid-2000s. Their best Premier League finish is third place, but they have a Cup Winners’ Cup title from 1965 and three FA Cup titles to their name.
Over the years, the club has become known for developing players who later went on to become major stars. Players such as Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Rio Ferdinand, and Michael Carrick all came through West Ham and achieved great success at other clubs.

Stratford Station is served by National Rail services operated by Greater Anglia and c2c, as well as London Overground, Docklands Light Railway, and the London Underground Jubilee and Central lines.
Stratford International Station is served by South Eastern Trains.
On the club’s website, you can find more detailed information about the best way to get to the stadium.
What are West Ham’s fans called?
West Ham fans are often called Hammers. They can also be referred to as The Irons or Claret and Blue Army, which are linked to the club’s colours and nickname.
Who are West Ham’s rivals?
The rivalry between Millwall and West Ham United is one of the oldest and most bitter in English football. In 1885, Millwall FC was founded by dockers and shipbuilders on the Isle of Dogs in London’s East End.
Ten years later, on the other side of the Thames, a team was formed at Thames Ironworks – later to become West Ham United – to boost workers’ morale. The teams were backed by shipbuilders and labourers who were already rivals in their trades. Football only intensified the rivalry.
The two clubs don’t meet very often on the pitch today, but there is another London team that raises the pulse of both players and die-hard fans: Tottenham.
West Ham fans voted Tottenham as their biggest rivals. After witnessing the atmosphere whenever these two meet, it’s easy to understand why Tottenham is among West Ham United’s most hated opponents.
Another “beloved” London-based enemy is Chelsea. The East–West London rivalry between these two clubs heated up when the Blues had a habit of “snatching” some of the Hammers’ best players – most notably John Terry, Joe Cole, and Frank Lampard.
