The History of Athletic Bilbao
Athletic Bilbao, also known as Athletic Club, is a Spanish football club from Bilbao in the Basque Country. English workers brought football to Bilbao in the late 19th century, and Basques who had studied in England further developed the game back home. The club was founded in 1898 and has enjoyed great success ever since.
Together with giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao is one of only three clubs never to have been relegated from the top division. They have also been crowned league champions eight times and won the Copa del Rey 24 times. Although their last golden era came in the 1980s, perhaps it’s time to climb back to the top again?
The team is nicknamed Los Leones (the Lions) and Rojiblancos (the Red and Whites), and they play their home matches at Estadio San Mamés, which holds over 53,000 spectators.
