SEATTLE MARINERS HISTORY

The Seattle Mariners have been part of MLB since 1977, though it took some time before the team made its mark on the league. In the 1990s, the club took a major step forward with superstars such as Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martínez and Randy Johnson, making the Mariners one of the most entertaining teams in baseball. The 1995 playoff series against the New York Yankees – featuring Griffey’s iconic walk-off sprint to home plate – remains one of the most memorable moments in MLB history.

After a challenging spell in the 2000s, the Mariners were revitalised when Ichiro Suzuki arrived from Japan in 2001, immediately setting the single-season hits record. Despite winning 116 games that year – one of the greatest regular seasons ever – a World Series title has so far eluded Seattle.

Today, the Mariners continue to build for the future, with their home ground, T-Mobile Park, considered one of MLB’s most beautiful ballparks, offering views of the Seattle skyline and Puget Sound.
