The history of Ipswich Town FC
Ipswich Town Football Club has a rich history dating back to 1878, when the club was founded in the historic market town of Ipswich in Suffolk. Initially an amateur club, Ipswich developed during the 20th century into an established part of English football and has long been an important symbol for the region in the east of England.
The most successful period came under manager Sir Alf Ramsey in the 1960s. In 1962, Ipswich sensationally won the league title in the then First Division, just one season after being promoted to the top tier. Under the leadership of Bobby Robson in the 1970s and 80s, the success continued. In 1978 the club won the FA Cup after defeating Arsenal at Wembley, and in 1981 Ipswich made history by winning the UEFA Cup.
Ipswich Town’s supporters are known for their loyalty and strong connection to the club. Home matches are played at Portman Road, a classic English stadium with a capacity of just over 29,000 spectators. The team plays in its characteristic blue shirts with white shorts and has long been a source of pride for the whole of Suffolk.
