New York Mets history
The New York Mets are a club with a history marked by both great highs and deep lows – but always backed by a loyal fan base. The team was founded in 1962 as one of MLB’s expansion franchises and quickly became New York’s new hope after both the Dodgers and the Giants moved west.
The Mets won their first World Series title in 1969 in what became known as the “Miracle Mets”, when they sensationally went from bottom-dwellers to champions. The next major triumph came in 1986, when Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden and Gary Carter led the team to a dramatic World Series victory over the Boston Red Sox.
The team plays its home games at Citi Field, where Mets fans – often referred to as “The 7 Line Army” – create an electric atmosphere. The rivalry with the New York Yankees in the “Subway Series” is one of the fiercest in baseball, and matchups against the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves also deliver intense battles.
