The history of PSG
Paris Saint-Germain, or simply PSG, was founded in 1970 following the merger of two clubs. In terms of paying supporters, PSG is the second largest club in France, just behind Olympique de Marseille. The matches between the two sides are known as Le Classique – the biggest fixture in Ligue 1. Since being acquired by the Qatar Investment Authority in 2011, PSG has achieved great success, virtually dominating the French league. The club has also gone on to win the Champions League and has proudly featured global superstars such as Zlatan Ibrahimović, Edinson Cavani, Lionel Messi, Thiago Silva, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappé.
PSG play their home matches at Parc des Princes – the “Park of Princes” – which was built ahead of the 1998 FIFA World Cup and holds nearly 49,000 spectators.

Where is Paris Saint-Germain’s stadium, Parc des Princes, located?
PSG’s home ground is located in the southwest of Paris. The metro is by far the best way to get to Le Parc des Princes. If you’re coming from central Paris, take line 9 — the nearest stop for the stadium is Porte de Saint-Cloud, just about a 5-minute walk away.
Alternatively, you can take line 10, which runs along Paris’s Left Bank (Rive Gauche). The station Porte d’Auteuil is around a 10-minute walk from the stadium.
More detailed information on how to get to Parc des Princes can be found on the club’s official website.
What are PSG’s fans called?
PSG supporters are often referred to as Les Parisiens or Les Parisiens supporters. However, they don’t have a specific nickname like some other football clubs do.
Unlike teams such as Liverpool (The Reds) or Manchester United (The Red Devils), PSG fans are generally known by the club’s own name, emphasising their connection to Paris Saint-Germain.
Who are PSG’s rivals?
The matches between PSG and Olympique de Marseille (OM) are known as Le Classique and represent one of the most intense and historic rivalries in French football.
Over the years, even though it isn’t a “traditional rivalry” geographically speaking, PSG vs Marseille has become the most significant fixture in French football. Le Classique is often seen as a clash between the capital and the provinces – north versus south.
The rivalry between PSG and OM extends far beyond football. Paris and Marseille are France’s two largest and most influential cities, and together they are also the country’s most successful football clubs, having won more than 40 domestic trophies between them.
A more recent rivalry has developed with AS Monaco since their return to Ligue 1. Thanks to their ability to compete financially with the French champions, this matchup has been dubbed Le Cashique or El Cashico, and has in recent years become another major attraction for football fans.
