The History of Celta de Vigo
Real Club Celta de Vigo, more commonly known simply as Celta, was founded in 1923 and is today a club with over 100 years of history. The team was formed through a merger of two Vigo-based clubs, Real Vigo Sporting and Real Club Fortuna de Vigo, with the purpose of creating a stronger team at national level.
The club first reached the top division, La Liga, in the 1939–40 season and has since played many campaigns in La Liga, with a few relegations to the second tier along the way.
After five years outside the top division, Celta returned to La Liga in 2012 and have remained there since, with mixed results but highlighted by their best finish in the 2015–16 season when they placed sixth.
Celta de Vigo play their home matches at the Estadio de Balaídos, which has a capacity of 24,870 spectators.
