Lazio’s history
SS Lazio was founded in 1900 and play in light blue shirts and white shorts. The club has won Serie A – Lo Scudetto – twice, and the Italian Cup seven times. In 1999, Lazio also won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and the following year secured their second league title under Swedish manager Sven-Göran Eriksson.
The club’s biggest rivals are, without question, AS Roma, with whom they share their home ground, the Stadio Olimpico. The matches between the two sides are known in Italy as the Derby della Capitale – one of Europe’s fiercest and most passionate derbies, and an experience every football fan should witness live. Notably, Lazio is one of the few Italian clubs still owned by Italians – in this case, Claudio Lotito.

Where is SS Lazio’s stadium, Stadio Olimpico, located?
The stadium is located north of Rome and can easily be reached on foot from Vatican City, offering a pleasant 4 km walk along the river. Alternatively, if you’re staying closer to the main train station (the Termini area in Rome), the best option is to take the metro, Italy’s version of the London Underground. Here are some directions that might be useful:
From Termini, take Metro Line A (the orange line) towards Ottaviano and get off at Flaminio. Then take tram number 2 from Piazzale Flaminio to Piazza Mancini (the final stop on the line). From Piazza Mancini, walk towards the river and cross the bridge at Ponte Duca d’Aosta to reach the stadium.
Alternatively, from Termini, take Metro Line A (the orange line) towards Battistini and get off at Ottaviano. Then take bus number 32 to Piazzale della Farnesina, from where you can walk to the stadium.
You can also take buses such as route 910, which runs from the Termini area to near Stadio Olimpico – we recommend asking your hotel reception for advice on the best line to take and for updated timetables, as they change regularly.

Who are SS Lazio’s rivals?
The rivalry between Lazio and AS Roma is one of the most intense and passionate in Italian football. Their encounters are known as the Derby della Capitale and are considered among the fiercest derbies in the world.
AS Roma and Lazio fans live for this match, and the entire city practically comes to a standstill when it’s being played. There’s a well-known saying about the Derby della Capitale: “In Milan, they talk about the derby for a week; in Rome, for a year.”
The rivalry has deep historical, political, and social roots, reflecting the divide between the working-class neighbourhoods traditionally associated with Roma fans and the wealthier districts linked to Lazio supporters.
Although the rivalry between Lazio and Napoli is not as strong as the one with AS Roma, there is still a degree of competition between the clubs. This rivalry stems from geographical and historical factors, as Lazio are based in central Italy while Napoli are from the south.
Matches between Lazio and Napoli often attract significant attention and hold great importance for the fans.
