CD Nacional history
CD Nacional, based in Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira, is a club with a long history in Portuguese football. Founded in 1910, the club has enjoyed several successful periods in the country’s top division, the Primeira Liga.
Nacional established itself as a regular presence in Portuguese top-flight football during the 2000s and has finished in the upper half of the table on several occasions. The club has also qualified for European competitions, facing teams from some of Europe’s leading football nations.
Home matches are played at Estádio da Madeira, beautifully situated high above Funchal and with a capacity of just over 5,000 spectators.
