The history of Standard Liege
Standard Liège is one of Belgium's most historic and successful football clubs and was founded in 1898. Based in Liège, the club plays its home matches at Stade Maurice Dufrasne, also known as Sclessin, where its passionate supporters create one of the most renowned football atmospheres in the country.
Standard Liège have won the Belgian league ten times and have also claimed several domestic cup titles over the years. The club has a long history in European competition, with reaching the 1982 European Cup Winners' Cup final among its greatest achievements. Standard faced Barcelona at Camp Nou in the final but were beaten 2–1.
With a strong local identity, loyal supporters and a long tradition in Belgian top-flight football, Standard Liège holds an important place in the country's football history. The rivalry with Anderlecht in particular also produces some of the most fiercely contested matches in Belgian football.
