The History of Borussia Dortmund
For a long time, Borussia Dortmund has been the only club to somewhat stand in the way of Bayern Munich’s total dominance in the Bundesliga. Founded in 1909, the club has won the Bundesliga eight times, including twice in the 2010s (2011, 2012). In 1997, the club also secured its first and so far only Champions League title after a final victory against Juventus.
In addition to the matches against Bayern Munich, we recommend the Ruhr derby against Schalke 04. Experiencing the Yellow Wall at Signal Iduna Park, with a capacity of 81,685 spectators, is truly something special and one of the most electrifying experiences in European football. In fact, Dortmund is among the clubs in Europe with the highest average attendance. In recent years, the club has also become known for bringing in young players and developing them into world-class stars.

Who are Borussia Dortmund’s rivals?
Der Klassiker between long-time title rivals Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund is perhaps one of the most anticipated matches of any Bundesliga season.
Like the rivalry between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille, the competition between Bayern and Dortmund is built on the fact that the two are each other’s biggest domestic rivals. And, just like Le Classique in France, Der Klassiker is a relatively new phenomenon.
This match is therefore not about local bragging rights, politics, or religion – it is simply about being Germany’s top team.
Another classic rivalry is known as Das Revierderby. Technically, this is the name for a football match between two clubs in the Ruhr region – known in German as Revier, a shortened form of Bergbaurevier (mining district) – in North Rhine-Westphalia. However, in most cases it refers to the derby between two of the most historically successful clubs from the region: Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04. Outside Germany, it is often called the Ruhr derby.
