The history of SD Eibar
SD Eibar, known as Armeros, was founded in 1940 in the Basque city of Eibar in the province of Gipuzkoa. For many years, the club played in the lower divisions before earning promotion to La Liga for the first time in 2014. There, Eibar quickly gained a reputation for its hardworking and down-to-earth style, challenging clubs far bigger than themselves. The team plays its home matches at Estadio de Ipurua, one of Spain’s most charming and compact stadiums, hosting just over 8,000 spectators surrounded by residential buildings and mountain slopes.
Despite being one of the smallest clubs ever to establish itself in Spain’s top tier, Eibar has built a loyal fanbase both locally and internationally. Their climb to the top was seen by many as a footballing miracle, making the club a favourite among neutral supporters worldwide. Eibar’s biggest rivals are found within the Basque Country, with matches against Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao being especially intense.
During their years in La Liga, Eibar featured several influential players. Takashi Inui, Sergi Enrich, Dani García and Pedro León all played key roles, and managers such as José Luis Mendilibar earned widespread respect for their clear footballing philosophy and their ability to maximise limited resources. Eibar may be small in size, but its heart, identity and history of hard work make it one of the most fascinating clubs in Spanish football.
