The history of Sporting Gijon
Sporting Gijón, known as Los Rojiblancos, was founded in 1905 in the coastal city of Gijón in Asturias. The club is one of Spain’s most traditional and experienced its greatest success during the 1970s and 1980s, when it established itself in La Liga and reached multiple Copa del Rey finals. Home matches are played at El Molinón, the oldest football stadium still in use in Spain, with a capacity of over 29,000 and renowned for its vibrant atmosphere.
Although Sporting Gijón is not among Spain’s wealthiest clubs, it boasts a highly passionate fanbase and a strong identity as a symbol of the Asturias region. The club’s main rival is Real Oviedo, and the Derbi Asturiano is considered one of the most intense derbies in Spanish football.
Over the years, Sporting has developed many notable players. The most famous is David Villa, who began his career in the club’s youth academy before becoming one of Spain’s greatest strikers of all time. Other prominent figures include Joaquín Alonso, Quini – one of the club’s top all-time scorers – and Abelardo, who served both as a player and a coach. Sporting Gijón may not always dominate the headlines, but its history, passion and deep local roots make it one of the most beloved clubs in Spain.
